Tailored Heritage
Each creation unmistakably unique
“Christmas is by far the most wonderful time of the year. It is a time for cherished moments together, family, and enchanting, magical surroundings. That is why Christmas begins early in our home. Already in November, the family starts decorating, baking, cutting and crafting,” says Caroline, who this year will celebrate Christmas with her three children at the family home in Switzerland. Caroline comes from an aristocratic family and grew up at Valdemar Castle on the island of Tåsinge. This heritage, together with the many years she spent living in London, helps shape her classic and nostalgic approach to Christmas.
Caroline grew up in a family where Christmas was deeply cherished and where great care was taken with everything from decorations and food to dressing for the occasion. These values are not only something she has passed on to her own children, but also something she has carried with her around the world. Her many years in London have added English touches to her Christmas traditions, but at heart, it is the classic Christmas evoked by Peters Jul, the beloved Danish Christmas tale, that holds a special place in her heart.
Nobility comes with a sense of tradition, and Caroline’s Christmas table for Royal Copenhagen reflects both her heritage and her instinct for blending old and new in a magical way. She has inherited the finest, delicate glass baubles from her grandparents and kept the handmade decorations her children made when they were very young in London. These treasured keepsakes are complemented by Christmas decorations she discovers on her travels or during her annual visits to Berings Blomster, Georg Jensen and Harrods. Caroline owns several Royal Copenhagen dinner services, including inherited pieces from Flora Danica, Blue Fluted Plain, and, not least, a complete Christmas service that she continues to use
right through to Easter. For her, it is first and foremost a service for celebrations, one that evokes happy memories and sets the scene for festive gatherings and good food. Caroline’s table setting is an extravagant tribute to the art of living well and a celebration of her love of decoration – of which, in her eyes, there can never be too much.
