A Celebration of the Imperfect
“Life rarely turns out quite the way we imagine it, but you can sprinkle a little glitter over everything and make the best of the circumstances. For me, Christmas is a time to make an extra effort to find the light and discover a little magic,” says May Lifschitz, who has invited her girlfriends to a
Christmas lunch celebrating imperfection. She seeks out light like a firefly, and for her, Christmas is a welcome opportunity to light candles and gather with the people she loves.
May’s Christmas is different from one year to the next, without being shaped by fixed traditions. She was born in Argentina, and her family is spread across two continents. As a result, she often celebrates Christmas with close friends and enjoys being part of other people’s Christmas traditions. When she celebrates with her mother, however, it is a tradition for them to call May’s sister in Buenos Aires, a simple gesture that creates a sense of connection across the distance.
Iben has fond memories of Christmas parties that continued well into the night, with board games, late-night snacks and a relaxed, carefree atmosphere. In keeping with the true spirit of Christmas, there was always room for one more guest. A generosity that Iben has carried with her ever since.
Christmas, gold, glitter and festive abundance
What Christmas Eve may lack in fixed rituals, May finds in the many festive Christmas lunches and gatherings throughout the season, where the format is familiar and traditions are part of the joy of coming together. This is why May has chosen to set her Christmas table for a lunch for six women. It is a dramatic and extravagant table that celebrates imperfection and the
unpredictable.
As a trans woman, May has often had to create her own place in the world by insisting on celebration and a zest for life, an attitude that finds expression and colour in the glow of disco balls. Royal Copenhagen’s black and white porcelain provides a classic foundation for the table, while the golden cracks of kintsugi meet the reds of Christmas, gold, glitter and festive abundance. Guests are invited to write a Christmas letter about something imperfect in their own lives that deserves to be celebrated, ready to hang on the Christmas
tree.
